David Kendig, what service are you talking about? My 68 TR 250 has a scratched up VIN plate, but the stamped plate is Clearly visible. The Oklahoma title matches, Kansas wants proof that is the # or I am supposed to go to court to get a title.

Anyone else have experience with this?
Thanks mark

It is interesting that you had a problem with a title that was issued with an error from the state of Az.  I also had a problem like that.  The car was originally from Calif. and was moved to AZ where a mistake was made on the title.  When I tried to bring it back to Calif. I had to go through a review process with a highway patrol officer who had to personally look at the car. This was a car that had the STC 1962 tag on it and those letters and numbers were added to the commission number to make up the VIN  for the vehicle.

Hi

I recentely was able to go to a privite tag and title service have a picture taken of the vin plate on my TR3A. In the state of maryland this made it possible to get a Title in Maryland my tr3a it came from ARIZONA HAD A MIX UP ON THE SERIAL NUMBER.
Best to take picture of vin plate and pay a service to get your issues fixed.

As Randall states the state of Calif. often put the STC196_ on the title in addition to the Commission number.  I have two TR4's and both have the STC tags ( like the one shown in Randall's photo).  One has that included on the title and the other does not.  Most often the only thing that "should" be there is the commission number.  But then each state gets to make up their own rules.
Truimph DID NOT put a year on the TR's.

It may depend on what state you are in.  In CA, the VIN is what the VIN is, the DMV does not care about what it should or should not have on the plate.  So the solution to your problem would be to take them the car and let the DMV (or state police) verify the numbers actually on the plate.  I've been through that process a couple of times now, and it was relatively painless but took several weeks for the new paperwork to arrive.

If the VIN has been removed from the vehicle and lost, or whatever, I'm afraid they insist on assigning a new number and plate.  Same thing may happen if the plate is on the car but has obviously been "tampered" with.

PS, AFAIK the factory never put the year on the commission number plate.  But the dealers sometimes did strange things, so it is possible that it was modified by the dealer.  In some cases, the dealer would attach a separate plate indicating model year; more or less regardless of when the car was made.  For example, my Triumph Sports 6 was made in mid-1963, but titled as a 1965 model and had a plate to that effect:

I am trying to register a 1966 TR 4a. On one side of the firewall there is a VIN number matching the title, but no year preceding the VIN as there is on the title (in other words, the indication "66" does not appear on the VIN number plate on firewall. On the other side of the car on the firewall, there is an indication of 1966. I need to demonstrate to the DMV that the "66" is not supposed to precede the VIN number on the plate. Can anyone assist?
